What I love most about teaching:
Teaching is rewarding everyday! As a reading specialist I get to watch my students
grow everyday as readers. The progress they make in one year is amazing!
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I enjoy facilitating adults almost as much as I love teaching children. I love getting
to know each learner as an individual. Every learner brings background and experience
to the course which makes every course I facilitate different. I probably learn
as much from the participants as they do from the course. My experience has been
more rewarding than I could have imagined.
Personal Information:
I have been married for 12 years. I have 2 wonderful children. My daughter is 7
and my son is 6. They keep my life very busy and full of energy between girl scouts,
cheerleading, soccer, t-ball and swimming. I also have an 11 year old cat and a
one year old puppy. We have a very busy house!!
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment was the very first day of my first year of teaching. I was teaching
first grade at the time. The moment the students walked into my room, I knew that
I had chosen the right profession - everything felt right!
Education:
- Elementary Education - SUNY Cortland, Cortland NY, 1994
- Reading Specialist - Western Maryland College (now McDaniel college), Westminster,
MD, 2000

I have worked with students for many years. From my early days as a first grade
teacher when I delighted in seeing their eyes when they discovered the magic of
reading to the days when, as an administrator visiting their classroom, I was and
still am always interested in helping students make meaning from the material they
are learning.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:

What I love most about teaching:
Teaching is a great profession! There are so many things that I love about teaching,
especially when students have felt the success needed to overcome all obstacles,

they can. I love when students have learned how to use the tools they need.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
Facilitating LSI courses allows teachers from a variety of teaching experiences,
the opportunity to reflect and learn from others. I love facilitating these courses,

What I love most about teaching:
I enjoy being able to see the students make strides in their learning and actually
have the concept stick and see them use it. This increase in learning and understanding
is the most uplifting thing about teaching.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I love to facilitate LSI courses as I actually get to interact with people from
various districts and see what other perspectives they have and what best practices
they utilize and share with others.
Personal Information:
I was born and raised in Staten Island, New York and am one of six children. I have
two children of my own, my son is 26 and lives in Philadelphia - he is a chef and
is the executive chef of Saute on the waterfront in Philadelphia. My daughter is
16 and is working toward understanding horticulture. She would love to run her own
flower shop someday.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
Dr. Seuss: "You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer
yourself in any direction you choose. You're on your own and you decide what you
know. You are the person to decide where you'll go."
My favorite moment in teaching:
I walked into a classroom with nine boys, all low readers all taller than me and
I was kind of in shock. I helped them learn how to read up to a third grade level
in 7th grade and they were my bodyguards for the next three years. They were the
most beneficial part to my teaching life...I still speak with them occasionally
and they are working and productive...good things.

provides me with an opportunity to interact with so many people from so many walks
of life, along with a knowledge that I have an impact on the future of my students.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
In addition to keeping up with the latest in educational technologies and best practices,

Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"It is a curiosity of teaching that no two days are alike, but, if we are not careful,
all the days can take on a deadening sameness. We must remember that we have every

to stagnate, remaining much the same teachers we were when we began." - Carol Ann
Tomlinson

What I love most about teaching:
I love teaching kindergarten because I think kindergartners are the best! They are
eager to learn, curious, observant, smart, busy, and FUN! They have a sense of wonder
about their world and get excited about learning new things.
I feel privileged and responsible in helping kindergarten children learn to love
school, to know learning is fun, and to feel confident and competent.
I especially enjoy helping kindergarten children learn to believe they are ALREADY
readers and writers who have important ideas to share. I like helping them learn
to put those ideas down on paper with pictures, letters, or simple words and helping
them know this is important work!
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I love facilitating LSI courses because I am able to interact with teachers representing

What I love most about teaching:
I have always believed that teaching touches the future (long before that was a
logo for our profession). If we do not educate children when they are young, enabling
them to be thinkers and problem solvers, our society will pay for them later in
either the welfare or prison system.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I thoroughly enjoy learning and growing with those who are as enamored with our
profession as I.
Personal Information:
Married for 37 years; mother of two, grandmother of 6 with another cherub due in
October.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"It is for us to say to ourselves:
I am only one, but I am one.
I cannot do everything, but still I can do something.
And I will not refuse to do something because I cannot do everything.
I will do what I can and keep on doing it."
- Reg Weaver, former NEA president
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment was when a former student, now in high school, sent me an invitation
to concert in which he was soloing. His note detailed how I had made him feel special
as a first-grader. He had never forgotten how I encouraged him to always try his
best. Perfection was not important, but effort was. And now his effort was paying
off.

What I love most about teaching:
Students grow as they learn and, unquestionably, my facilitation of that growth
is rewarding and encouraging. I have taught at all levels – K-12, undergraduate,
graduate and even older adults in non-credit workshops. In all of these settings,
the teacher/student relationship helps students to improve their skills and increase
their understandings, which in turn has an important impact on their work and personal
lives. It is a joy to be part of this process.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I have been impressed by the commitment of LSI students to their professional development
and practice. The courses are well structured and substantive; the students take
advantage of the opportunities that the courses provide.
Personal Information:
Over the years, I have studied and worked in a number of professional areas, but
they have all been related to schools and education. I have taught on all grade
levels, from kindergarten through graduate school, have conducted workshops for
in-service teachers and older adults, and have been the director of education (principal)
of two private schools. I am currently the associate director of teacher education
at a state university where, among other responsibilities, I coordinate alternative
licensure programs, respond to state and federal policies, and teach courses such
as educational psychology, differentiated instruction and teacher leadership. My
undergraduate and master’s degrees are in Spanish. My doctorate is in Curriculum
and Instruction with a concentration in cognitive development. I have held teaching
licensure in three states, including Pennsylvania.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire." - William
Butler Yeats
"A great teacher never strives to explain his vision – he simply invites you to
stand beside him and see for yourself." - R Inman
My favorite moment in teaching:
There are so many… Last year, a woman of about thirty decided to seek teaching licensure
after working in other fields for a number of years. Her first course was Theory
of Development and Learning, which I was teaching. Ms. P struggled with her confidence.
She asked questions about all assignments and submitted drafts of all of her work.
She did very well in the course, but continued to stay in touch for support as she
took additional courses and considered a job offer. Today, she knows the foundations
of education, she successfully completed her first teaching assignment… and she
is beginning to show confidence in her professional abilities.

My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment in teaching was when received a visit from one of my former students.
He was a student who struggled in school and resented authority figures (especially
teachers). Our first semester together was not pleasant, however, I saw great potential
in him. I would not give up. At the end of the year, he was .5 credits from graduating.
After MUCH encouragement, he went to summer school and finished. Six months later,
he knocked on my door in his military uniform. He completed basic training and came
to give me a Mother's Day card. He told me that because of my tenacity and belief
in him, he is proud to call me his surrogate mother, friend, and lifelong teacher.

What I love most about teaching:
Teaching is the process of watching someone master a practice they are unsure of
doing. I enjoy instructing learners through this process and seeing their hard work
and dedication pay off.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I became an educator to help others learn. The process of facilitating LSI courses
focuses on an area of great interest to me - learning and technology. Watching groups
of learners who don't know each other grow in their thought processes of using technology
and building new relationships makes my job worth every second I put into helping
them succeed.
Personal Information:
I was born and raised near the historic town of Gettysburg, PA. I have been a teacher
for 10 years, and in between 2 teaching jobs, I took time off to explore career
areas of interest: retail marketing and management, and corporate training. In my
spare time, I enjoy my wife and two daughters. When I'm not with them, I'm on my
computer. Isn't technology great!
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"Don't go through life, grow through life." - Eric Butterworth
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment in teaching came when I had a student as a senior who had just
about given up. She told me she just wasn't going to graduate. I told her, You can't
give up. Keep going. I offered to tutor her and help her go the distance. She worked
with me every moment that she could. She graduated that year. After she got her
diploma, she came to me and gave me a big hug and said, Thanks. Who knew one simple
word could have such a lasting impact on you?

What I love most about teaching:
I love that every day is fresh. You are never bored. No other occupation "renews'
itself every September with the opportunity to give children a voice.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:

Personal Information:
My name is Linda Demuth. I am currently the principal of a 500 student elementary

together since... We are the proud parents of two daughters, Jen and Chris, and
are grandparents to the beautiful Abby and Avery. My on-line work with the is the

Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I love to facilitate LSI courses because it offers me the opportunity to share my

My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment in teaching was dealing with a student who could not grasp the
concept of positive and negative integers. It took some time but the greatest reward
was seeing the light come on. Opening that door for the student allowed her to continue
on and overcome other obstacles. It also gave me the encouragement to never give
up on a student.

What I love most about teaching:
The thing that I love the most about teaching is having the ability to share my
knowledge with my students. It is a very rewarding career and at times very challenging.
However, the moments that I can see my students "get it" or have that "ah ha" moment
makes it all worth it.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
Facilitating LSI courses gives me the ability to interact with students in a completely
different way. LSI courses allow each study group to share their knowledge and learn
from each other.
Personal Information:
I reside in the Harrisburg area with my husband Paul, my son Garrett, and my German
Shorthair Pointer, Lundin. I spend most of my time running my son to and from sports.
He plays soccer, basketball, and baseball, so we are busy all year long. In my free
time, I like to scrapbook and spend time with my family.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"Learn what you need....Share what you know."
"Behind every great teacher is a student rolling their eyes."
My favorite moment in teaching:
I don't have one specific favorite moment in teaching, however I do enjoy seeing
my students develop into young adults. I am at the point in my career where many
of my high school students have graduated from college and have started their own
career. Some of them have chosen teaching as a career and are now my colleagues!
Education:

What I love most about teaching:
What I love most about teaching is finding the ahh ha moments with a student. This
is that moment when I can finally see that someone has reached full understanding
of a difficult concept or when someone has revealed a meaningful truth for themselves.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I am new to facilitating courses. However, I have been an online student for three
and a half years. What I love most about the online community is the freedom that
this method of education provides to students, the fellowship of other adults who
are active practitioners and the sense of true scholarship.
Personal Information:
I am currently teaching fifth grade in a small rural school in Western PA while
finishing up a doctoral degree online. When I finish I plan to remain an online
facilitator while teaching public school until my children, who are now 2 and 7
are much older. I do have the eventual goal of teaching face to face at the University
level. However, for now I am quite satisfied with where I am.
I have been happily married for 12 years, my husband and I share two beautiful little
girls and many unique hobbies. We are Native American Dancers, we reenact the Middle
Ages, we enjoy swimming, teaching lifeguarding, hiking, camping, traveling and rock
hunting.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"The greatest failure is not to try."
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment in teaching is the smile I remember on the face of an 18 year
old deaf girl when I taught her how to dance. We had the music so loud that she
could feel the vibrations and the people across the street could hear us, but she
was able to learn a swing dance with rhythm. I will never forget it.

What I love most about teaching:
Teaching is the most valuable tool available for making a difference in the lives
of others.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
LSI allows the collaboration of great minds through the integration of technology,
experiences, content and personal passions. These courses provide the vehicle by
which educators can extend themselves into a learning community that affords the
expansion of current perspectives. The ultimate result is personal growth which
occurs through the support of knowledgeable and caring colleagues.
Personal Information:
I live with my husband (Dave) and two daughters (Tori -14-& Olivia-10). We all help
care for "Grandma," (my mother, Dorothy – 82), who has moved in so we can support
her medical needs as she ages.
Our home is in Exeter Township near Reading, PA. Vacationing, charity work, long
walks, swimming, reading, exploring, and exercising are just a few of the things
we love to do together.
I love travel. I also enjoy the quiet moments life offers like taking a peaceful
walk or curl up with a great book. I also love "friend" time. I frequently get together
with good friends to do things. This might include a trip to a major city, a festival,
craft fair, or other local event, or some type of service project.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"Tell me I'll forget, show me, I may remember, but involve me and I'll understand."
- Chinese Proverb
"Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start from now
and make a brand new ending." - Carl Bard
"Celebrate what's right with the world." - Dewitt Jones
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite experiences as a teacher include supporting the evolution of a learner
that grows to experience success in spite of challenges, adversity and difficulties.
There is nothing in this world like the moment we see the spark of understanding
touch a child's heart and change a life for the better.

What I love most about teaching:
Teaching is in my blood and I will always be a teacher. I love teaching because
it is so much more than what we deliver in the classroom, but also the life lessons
we teach our students on a daily basis.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I truly love facilitating LSI because I get to share my experiences in the classroom
with other educators and also learn from the members in each group that have their
own unique experiences.
Personal Information:
I am a principal at an area middle school. I have three boys ages 13, 12, and 4

most important aspect of my life, after my family which comes in first!
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"He that would be a leader must also be a bridge." - Welsh Proverb
My favorite moment in teaching:
My favorite moment in teaching was when a student wrote an essay about a volunteer
project that he had completed for my class and wrote in the essay that he felt his
life had no meaning until he began to volunteer and help others. It was an amazing
moment and I still cry when I think about it. We do not know how much we influence
our students lives until moments such as this.

What I love most about teaching:
When I was in the classroom, the thing that kept me going was the energy of my students
and their need to push ahead and know more. I moved into a staff development role
and can now help today's teachers see what I saw: young minds open to new possibilities.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
Being a lifelong learner, it is enjoyable being around like-minded adults. Learning
is more meaningful when you can interact with others. Being part of a small group
of course participants and helping them to get the most out of the course to assist
with their classroom instruction is fulfilling.
Personal Information:
I am married to the same man for 38 years. We have two daughters. Kristen, 34, is

Kelly, 30, lives near us in Harrisburg and is single.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"You did what you knew how to do, and when you knew better, you did better." - Maya
Angelou
My favorite moment in teaching:
One of my most vivid memories from my days in the classroom is a non-instructional
event. My highest level seventh grade class pulled a practical joke on me. I had
played right into their hands. We laughed about it for weeks. It was then that I
realized that I had made a connection with all my students, not just that class.
Education:

Related experience, recognition, awards, etc.:
For the 17 years prior to retirement, I was in the professional staff development
field. On occasion, schools would present a certificate to me as a recognized speaker
at their conference. My brush with fame came in the form of a letter from Jay McTighe,
Director of Maryland Assessment Consortium, complimenting me on a booklet I had
written on Classroom Testing and Grading Practices. His friend, Thomas Guskey, Professor
University of Kentucky, also was complimentary of the booklet and asked to be able
to cite it in his writing as a possible resource for educators. These are my intrinsic
rewards for the time and effort it took to write the booklet.

the Blue Ridge School District. It's a small rural community aspiring for Mayberry
status nestled in the northern most region of northeast PA. In lieu of teaching
the last two years, I was hired as our school's technology integration coach through
the Classrooms For the Future grant. This year I am back in the classroom teaching

What I love most about teaching:
What I love most about teaching can be paraphrased from a line in Chaucer's Canterbury
Tales - "Gladly would he learn and gladly would he teach." Teaching is a way to
reach out to others to help them grow and develop as individuals; in the process
the teacher continues to learn and grow as well!
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
The courses that are part of Master of Science in Education as part of the National
Institute for Professional Practice - Establishing Learning Goals...,
Extending Student Learning, Creating an Effective Classroom Environment - all sound
very exciting and relevant to those who are practicing professionals. Indeed, the
National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education - NCATE - has recently proposed
new approaches to bridge the gap between the theory and practice. With the busy
pace of life online professional education courses are of great benefit to individuals
who wish to bridge this gap.
Personal Information:
Dr. Richard Lawrence Pysch is currently an administrator with the Pine-Richland
School District located near Pittsburgh, PA. He has been with Pine-Richland for
over twenty years and has been involved in many district led professional development
activities.

Clarion University. He has taught for Chatham University in the past. Dr. Pysch
is affiliated Slippery Rock Universities Professional Development Schools initiative
and is an accredited trainer for Slippery Rock's Principal Assessment Center.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
Chaucer - "Gladly would he learn and gladly would he teach."
My favorite moment in teaching:
many, many over the years - but, overall, the "charge" one gets from a lovely interaction
with students that extends their knowledge about a topic and invigorates the teacher
to learn something new about the topic himself.

and perspectives everyone brings to an online community. You can learn so much from

What I love most about teaching:
I love the moment when a young reader figures out that all of those squiggles on
the page are really letters and that those letters are put together into words and
oh... I CAN READ!!! I have lead so many students on that journey, yet it never ceases
to be amazing to me that they are able to put all of that confusing information
together and make sense of it!!
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I love facilitating courses for two reasons. First, I love sharing all of the exciting
ideas and strategies that I have collected with others. Second, I have found that
I learn as much from the participants as they do from me!! I love being able to
add to my own tool belt while supporting others to do the same!
Personal Information:
I live in York, Pennsylvania with my husband Pete and our two daughters, Hannah
(4) and Rachel (1). The girls keep me very busy, but when I do have some free time
I love to read. My family loves to camp and go to the beach. We also like to ride
bikes and have picnics at the park.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
"I'm learning all the time. The tombstone will be my diploma." - Eartha Kitt

rewarding moment for me as a teacher or facilitator. That moment aids the student
in putting the mysterious pieces of the learning puzzle together and building a
new level of understanding that is applied in the next level of learning. My area
of focus of my teaching has been in the reading. It is exhilarating to watch the
young child master the independence in bringing meaning from the print or in expressing
oneself in drawing and writing. The same pleasure is experienced when the teacher
becomes aware of and applies a new strategy in instruction and observes her students
interacting and demonstrating their learning.
Why I love facilitating LSI courses:
I enjoy facilitating LSI courses for several reasons:
- First, I have the opportunity to meet and work with enthusiastic teachers who are
eager to continue learning and improve their teaching practices in their classrooms.
- Secondly, through the coursework the students and I build a relationship as we work
through the coursework. Through the interaction in discussion groups, entries in
the learning logs, and responses to the unit essays, I support and foster confidence,
inquiry, and learning with my learners. They, in turn, note the evidence demonstrated
in improved instructional practices and classroom learning for their students.
- Lastly, because the learners are engaged in action based research in their classrooms.
The teachers gain practical knowledge as they develop their metacognitive research
culminating activity for the course.
Personal Information:
My household has no grandchildren, but my husband and I enjoy our six cats and their
six different personalities. I enjoy planting in my flower gardens, working on puzzle
books with my husband, traveling, relaxing on the beaches in the Leeward Islands,
and reading books.
Favorite educational/inspirational/motivational quote:
Unity
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.
One was a teacher – the tools he used
Were books, music and art.
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding hand,
And a gentle, loving heart.
Day after day, the teacher toiled with touch
That was deft and sure.
While the parent labored by his side
And polished and smoothed it o’er.
And when at last, their task was done
They were proud of what they had wrought,
For the things they had molded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought.
And each agreed they would have failed
If each had worked alone.
For behind the teacher stood the school
And behind the parent, the home.

What I love most about teaching:
I love that each and every day brings new and exciting ideas since teaching is not
a dull and repetitious job. Although the content remains the same, the students
make some interesting discoveries which never cease to amaze me!
